Food in Tiruvannamalai
Food around the temple is overwhelmingly vegetarian South Indian: tiffin such as idli, dosa and pongal in the morning and evening, and full meals at lunch. Here's where to find food near the temple, on the Girivalam path and near the ashrams, plus tips for eating well on a pilgrimage.
What to expect
- Tiffin in the morning and evening: idli, dosa, vada, pongal and upma with sambar and chutneys.
- Meals at lunch: rice with sambar, rasam, vegetables, curd and more, often on a banana leaf.
- Filter coffee and tea everywhere.
- Food near the temple is vegetarian almost everywhere, and many pilgrims avoid non-vegetarian food during their visit.
Near the temple
The streets around the temple, especially near the east Rajagopuram, have many vegetarian restaurants and “hotels” (the local word for eateries) serving tiffin and meals. Mornings after darshan are busy, so eat before or after the peak.
Temple annadhanam
The official temple website lists annadhanam, free meals for devotees, among the temple’s services. Ask at the temple office for the time and place on the day. See the first-time visitor guide.
On the Girivalam path
- Tea stalls and snack stalls line the route, with many more on Pournami nights.
- Devotee groups often give out water and food along the road on full-moon nights.
- Many pilgrims walk on a light stomach and eat afterwards; see first-time Girivalam.
Near the ashrams (Chengam Road)
The Chengam Road and Ramana Nagar area near Sri Ramanasramam has cafés and restaurants serving long-stay visitors, often with lighter and international menus alongside South Indian food. Sri Ramanasramam provides South Indian meals to guests staying at the ashram.
Food and water tips
- Drink bottled or filtered water, and carry a refillable bottle. Single-use plastic is banned in Tamil Nadu.
- In summer, prefer freshly cooked, hot food, and be careful with cut fruit left standing.
- Carry some snacks for Girivalam, and for children.
- Leftovers and litter attract monkeys on the hill paths, so keep food packed away.
