1. Choose your time

Come at opening (5:30 AM) or early on a weekday morning. Check the Pournami calendar first. Full-moon days and weekends are far busier, which is wonderful for atmosphere but slow for darshan.

2. Arrive and leave your footwear

The main entrance is the east Rajagopuram, at the end of the main street in the town centre. The north Ammani Amman Gopuram is the other entrance listed on the official website. Leave your footwear at a stand outside and note the gate. Carry only a small bag. See dress code and rules.

3. Pick a queue

  • General (dharma) darshan is free.
  • Special-entry darshan tickets, sold at counters near the entrance, get you into a shorter queue. Fees are set by the temple and can change, so check the official website.
  • Elderly and differently-abled visitors: ask at the temple office about assistance before joining a queue.

4. Follow the usual order of worship

Pilgrims usually move from the outer courtyards inward, then back out:

  1. Pray at Sambandha Vinayagar in the outer courtyard.
  2. Walk through the inner gopurams, stopping at the Nandi that faces the sanctum.
  3. Take darshan of Arunachaleswarar in the main sanctum.
  4. Visit the shrine of Unnamulai Amman.
  5. Circle the inner corridors clockwise.
  6. On the way out, see the thousand-pillared hall and the Pathala Lingam beneath it.

The shrines guide explains who is worshipped where, and the architecture guide explains the layout.

5. Prasadam and annadhanam

  • Prasadam such as laddu is sold at the temple counters.
  • Postal prasadam can be ordered through the HR&CE prasadam service.
  • Annadhanam: the official website lists annadhanam (free meals for devotees) among the temple’s services. Ask at the temple office for the time and place.

6. After darshan

  • Many pilgrims set out on Girivalam directly from the east gopuram.
  • Sri Ramanasramam, about 2 km along Chengam Road, makes a peaceful next stop.
  • Look up at the Rajagopuram from the street outside: the carvings are clearer from a distance.

Common questions

How long does darshan take at Tiruvannamalai?

On a quiet weekday morning, darshan in the main shrines can take under an hour; allow two hours to see the complex properly. On weekends, Pournami and festival days, queues can take several hours.

Is there free food at the temple?

The temple runs an annadhanam (free meal) scheme for devotees, listed under the official temple services. Ask at the temple office for the time and place on the day of your visit.
